Organisation of Amnesty International has issued a report accusing the Greek Cypriot administration for being unsuccessful to protect the freedom of expression before the 24 April referandum held in southern Cyprus, putting forward concrete evidence of extortion in order to make Greek Cypriots to give up voting "yes" to the Annan Plan.
It has been verified in the report that, after the call by the Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos to vote "no" for the Annan Plan, both the Greek Cypriot administration and the Greek Cypriot community have been unsuccessful for protecting the freedom of expression and noted that Greek Cypriot public servants were threatened by losing their jobs through telephone calls. Furthermore, it has been expressed that Greek Cypriots who supported the "yes" campaign were aggravated, windows of their cars broken down, their properties vandalised and that they were beaten. The Amnesty International drew attention to the fact that noone were arrested by the Grek Cypriot police during that period. |
